One Million Eelgrass Plants in Lake George for FWC Restoration Project
The St. Johns River Eelgrass Revegetation Project involved the planting of 1,000,000 native eelgrass (Vallisneria neotropicalis) plants in Lake George, using verified stock harvested from Lake Monroe by AquaTech Eco Consultants. The large-scale environmental restoration project was contracted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
This ambitious project aims to restore vital submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), which plays a critical role in maintaining water quality, stabilizing sediments, and providing essential habitat for fish, manatees, and other aquatic species. The planting is within fenced enclosures designed to protect the young plants from herbivory, allowing them to establish and thrive.
